‘On the first day of the week, early in the morning and while it was still dark,
Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
… Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.’
(JOHN 20:1 & 11)
Mary stood in front of an empty grave; she was devastated; she couldn’t believe what happened – couldn’t understand why her entire life just got shattered as her Savior & Lord, the One they called Christ, was crucified.
A while ago she hated her life; she was lost, despised, nobody wanted her, nobody liked her – she didn’t like herself – then she met Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus drove out seven demons from her – she was a rugged girl; but when she met Jesus, He saved her; He cleansed her, forgave her for all her sins against God and man, gave her a new reason to live. Then her Reason for living got nailed to a cross – they crucified her new found Life; her Hope, her Savior and buried Him in a grave.
She stood in front of that grave crying, looking.
You might be in a place today where you don’t understand why certain things are happening in your life that is not according to plan.
You’ve given your life to Christ; turned your back on sin; walked with Jesus; seen Him doing miracles; felt His glorious presence early in the morning and late at night; you have felt His forgiving touch, and now you’re standing in front of a situation where everything seems lost and in front of this big grave that has swallowed all your hope, you cry out to the LORD and like Mary you don’t see Him.
'And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”’ (JOHN 20:12-13)
And you have been in that situation or maybe you are right in the middle of a situation this very morning where you’ve been looking for Jesus; you’ve been looking for God; you’re looking for an answer but you can’t seem to find Him.
I want to tell you this morning, child of God; the LORD has promised you that He will never leave you, never forsake you – and God is no man that He would lie!
'She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize Him.’ (JOHN 20:14)
Many times you and I go through storms and we don’t recognize Jesus standing right in front of us – we don’t realize that the very situation that we are in is from God, and that He Himself is standing there ready to help us; ready to pick us up and strengthen us!
How do we see God in the storms? The Bible says that only the pure of heart will see God.
Look what happens in verse 15
‘“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought He was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken Him away, tell me where you have put Him, and I will go and get Him.” (JOHN 20:15)
Mary made a statement; and that’s the statement that God wants from His children – are you willing to go wherever He is in order to find Him; are you willing to seek Him wholeheartedly; are you prepared to take up your cross and follow Him?
Mary answered ‘YES, I will go and get Him!!’
‘Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned around and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means “Teacher”).’ (JOHN 20:16)
She recognized Him!
Child of God, no matter what you are going through or what giants you might still have to face on your Christian walk – know that your Heavenly Father is watching over you.
He calls you the apple of His eye – He is crazy about you!
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are never far away, and that You keep watch over me even in the darkest hour of my life. Thank You in the wonderful Name of our Lord and Savior; Jesus Christ! AMEN
